PETN inaugurates new school in Thialle

This week, we held the inauguration of a new school in Thiallé, a village in the commune of Taiba N’Diaye, Senegal, where our 158.7MW wind farm, Parc Eolien Taiba N’Diaye (PETN) is located. The inauguration was attended by the mayor of the town of Taïba Ndiaye.

Education is a vital part of socio-economic development, and a key focus area of Lekela’s ESG work in and around Taiba N’Diaye. With the new school, both Lekela and the local authorities are aiming to create more opportunities in education for young people growing up in Taiba N’Diaye.

The goal is to turn Thialle College into a top educational institution, with PETN having worked very closely with local authorities to ensure that the school has a high quality of teaching and learning, particularly in STEM subjects, and fits the needs of young people in the community.

32 students have already been enrolled at the school for the 2022/2023 school year, with more expected to join for the next year. The building has two blocks of three classrooms, a fully furnished administrative block, a library and a fully equipped laboratory and on-site bathrooms for both boys and girls.

The new school building has been financed by the Communal Investment Plan (CIP) put in place by Pac Eolien Taiba N’Diaye, and is just one part of Lekela’s work in and around the community of Taiba N’Diaye. As with all Lekela projects, PETN is accompanied by a long-term programme of social investment programme that will see up to $20 million invested over the course of the windfarm’s lifetime.

These projects have a wide focus, supporting biodiversity, education, employment and more. At every stage, community members are involved in the planning and execution of projects, ensuring that the initiatives Lekela organises tackle community needs.
